Sheet Metal Punching Services

One of the profiling processes we do at Edalica that has been completely automated for efficiency using our robust Finn Power technology to service our customers is punching. By executing a variety of metal material at high speed and heavy tonnage capability with the highest productivity for small and large jobs, we achieve the highest productivity.

Benefits of Punching

Custom Finishing

Metal fabrication process is punched for you to create holes in metal sheets having varying shapes and sizes ranging from rectangular, square, diamond and spherical. Besides that, they are used in the fabrication of metal louvers for airflow or light penetration regulation.

Guaranteed Automation

The automatic loading of the machine allows it to run in continuous but effective manner and can handle up to 1200 hits per minute on the metal sheet.

Material Versatility

Metal of varying material, ranging from stainless steel through aluminum, of medium to large thickness can be punched. AND it can keep punches with no variation at the same precision more times than not.

Cost-Effective

Punching is by far the cheapest method to perforate a metal work piece in medium to high production volumes. The process is actually very fast so they are saved up with time and human intervention, to finish the needed product.

When to Use Metal Punching?

Punch is a metal fabricating process in which a punch removes a fragment slug from the metal piece when the punch is applied. When the punch goes into the punching dye, the process makes a hole at the metal surface. In this process a hardened steel punch forces itself through a metal sheet creating perforations. These can also be altered in terms of size and shape to meet your tolerances.

Batch production or series manufacturing can be very cost effective if metal punching is employed. To decide if punching is the best way to go for you – here are a few questions to answer.

  • First, how many parts are you trying to get your hands on? It can take as little as 30 minutes or more depending on the job to set up a turret punch press. If the volumes are small and the parts are flat, you will have no problem designing and fabricating the same job in a fraction of the time required to set up a turret punch, making the laser cutter a much less expensive alternative.
  • The second is if your project requires custom punches and dies produced. Many sizes are available in standard shapes like circles, ovals and rectangles. In cases more complex in shape, the manufacture of custom dies and punches may need to be done first. For punching and this kind of tooling can cost quite a bit from £200-300 per piece through to 10x that for blanking jobs. Further, custom tooling might take 2 weeks to increase total delivery time.
  • Third , What is the part size and thickness ? Medium sheet metal feed size is 2500 x 1250 mm and the feeding thickness range of carbon steel /stainless steel / aluminium is 0.5…4 mm. The fit may not be so great with anything outside of that scope.

We would encourage talking to our engineers about your project needs to establish the best possible way to produce your parts.

    Sheet Metal Punching Process

Metal fabrication process that uses material removal to obtain a metal part with the desired shape and features, metal punching is one. The punch press is a very fast machine that moves the punch towards the die downward and forces it to create holes, cutouts, embosses, etc.

For clarity’s sake, metal punching and blanking are two different operations with one simple differentiator. Metal punched out in punching is called scrap. In blanking, the final punch out leaves the part out.

Operations of sheet metal punching can also be packaged in forming. All of this is possible, features like embossed patterns, raised letters and so on.

Any punch press comes with standard shapes, i.e. simple rectangles, circles and ovals. In these cases you may need custom tooling. Normal customisation application is usually common based on the total volumes and materials used.

To complement the punch, there is a die. The important part there is the clearance between the dies and punches to give optimum quality results.
